Who is Salvador Dali?

Salvador Dali was a very eccentric character and although a great painter would do anything for publicity, fame and fortune. He was the most well known of the Surrealist painters who based their ideas on dreams and the subconscious mind. They were at the height of their fame during the 1930's and 1940's. Dali is the man who once arrived at a gala event in a Rolls Royce full of 1000 cauliflowers and is also known to have given a lecture in full diving suit, including lead boots and helmet. Pablo Picasso was like a bull, very strong willed, always looking for new challenges and never satisfied with his achievements. Andy Warhol was an enigma, a brilliant self-publicist who hated crowds, a great ideas man who rarely produced his own work without the help of his 'Factory' friends. He came to prominence in the sixties with his outrageous blond wigs that purposely didn't fit and his momentous large scale prints of Campbell soup cans. His most famous works were his portraits of film stars such as Marilyn Monroe. Known for giving presents, like tiny dogs in pink waistcoats delivered in brown carrier bags, to whoever might further his career , Warhol was outrageous. Who is Vincent van Gogh?

Vincent van Gogh is probably best known for two things which are in fact related; cutting off his ear and the sunflower paintings. He painted six versions of the sunflowers to decorate the bedroom for his guest the painter Paul Gauguin. He and Paul argued one drunken night which led to the ear chopping incident. Van Gogh only painted for ten years from the age of 27 and sold just one painting in his life time. However, he did produce wonderful paintings and used some really odd methods for creating them. One time he was caught in the street painting at night with a hat on which there was a dozen lit candles. Who is Claude Monet?

Above all else Monet was fascinated by the effects of light and the problems of trying to capture that on canvas. Married twice, he was always, until the last years of his life, quite poor, but very adept at borrowing money from friends and disappearing from houses without paying the rent. When he did become successful he bought a house at Giverney, near Paris and created his famous garden and lake, after diverting a river. Some of his water lilly paintings were so huge he had a special painting frame on wheels constructed so he could paint large sections of his 12' high pictures without having to come down to ground level. Monet was an entertaining character who through his paintings made Impressionism the most popular art movement of all time. To find out how he did that why not invite him to your party?   Monet Party Idea
Big ideas, big ambitions, lots of interesting characters, mixed with Gallic charm.
